How to Choose a Shopify Free Gift App
Ten questions to ask before you install a Shopify free gift app: how gifts are added, discount functions, theme impact, uninstall cleanup, billing and data.
Shopify can run a free gift offer without an app. It has a Buy X get Y discount with a free option, and for a store that wants one simple gift it is enough. The reasons to add a free gift app are narrower: the gift has to arrive in the cart without the shopper adding it, the offer needs steps that one native discount cannot express, or the store needs the offer shown on the storefront. Once you decide you need an app, the choice comes down to how it is built, and Shopify documents most of that. This is a checklist of ten questions to ask any free gift app before you install it, each paired with what Shopify's own documentation says. It names no apps. Ask the same ten of every vendor you shortlist, including us.
1. Does the gift get added automatically?
Start with what you are trying to fix. Shopify's Help Center says of its native Buy X get Y discount: "Customers must add all items to their cart manually." The free item is therefore not placed in the cart for the shopper. If your offer is "spend 75 dollars, get a tote," a shopper who never adds the tote never gets it, and the cart does not tell them.
Ask the vendor: when a cart qualifies, is the gift added without the shopper doing anything, and what happens when the cart drops back below the line? Ask to see it on a test store, with the cart going up and down across the threshold.
2. Does it use Shopify Functions for the discount?
Shopify's developer documentation says discount Functions "enable you to create discount functionality that isn't offered out of the box with Shopify," and that Shopify executes the Function to calculate discounts "in real-time when buyers add products to their cart." It also describes three discount classes (order, product and shipping) that define a discount's effect on a cart. The same page says the GraphQL Admin API can also create and manage native discounts without a Function.
So there are at least two designs, and the docs do not rank them. Ask which one the app uses for the gift, and ask what happens to the discount if the app is slow or unavailable. A discount that Shopify itself calculates at the cart is a different dependency from a script that edits the cart in the browser.
3. How does it behave with discount combinations?
Shopify's Help Center says each discount has a class (product, order or shipping), that you choose which classes it can combine with, and that when two discounts conflict only one applies unless each is edited to allow the combination. It sets limits that bite on a busy store: a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts, which includes app-based discounts, and a maximum of 5 product or order codes and 1 shipping code on one order. It also says that app developers need to update their apps to work with the discount combinations API, and that merchants whose app discounts will not combine should contact the developer.
Ask: which classes does the gift discount belong to, does it combine with my sitewide codes and my free shipping, and can I set that per offer? Then test it, with a code in the cart.
4. Does it use theme app extensions or edit theme code?
Shopify's documentation on theme app extensions says merchants can add dynamic elements "without having to interact with Liquid templates or code," that they "won't need to manually edit their theme code," and that this decreases the risk of introducing breaking changes to the theme. A second page explains that app blocks are supported only in themes with JSON templates (Online Store 2.0 themes), while app embed blocks are supported in all Shopify themes.
Ask: does the app add storefront elements through a theme app extension, or does it ask me to paste snippets into theme files? If you run a theme that predates Online Store 2.0, ask whether the app works with it and how it is switched on.
5. What is left behind when I uninstall?
Shopify's UX guidance for theme app extensions states: "blocks associated with the apps are automatically and entirely removed from online store themes" when merchants uninstall. That covers blocks built as theme app extensions. It does not say what happens to anything else the app created, such as discounts, products you imported as gifts, tags or metafields, and the pages we read do not say.
Ask the vendor for a written list: what the app removes on uninstall, what stays, and how to delete it. Test it on a development store before you do it on your live one.
6. How does it bill?
Shopify's billing documentation says all apps published on the Shopify App Store are required to use a Shopify-provided billing solution, and describes free, monthly and annual recurring, and usage-based plan types, and says charges are added directly to the merchant's Shopify invoice; in its pricing flow the merchant starts the upgrade and Shopify's admin processes the charge. So a charge should appear on your Shopify invoice. Ask: is the price flat or tied to usage, what counts as usage, what happens at the end of a trial, and can I see the full charge before I approve it? If an app asks for a card on its own site, ask why.
7. What customer data does it read?
Shopify's documentation defines protected customer data as "any data that directly relates to a customer or prospective customer," splits it into two levels (level 1 excludes name, address, phone and email fields; level 2 includes them and requires participating in data protection reviews), and says public apps request access through the Partner Dashboard. Its first requirement is to "process only the minimum personal data required to provide app functionality to merchants."
A gift offer rarely needs a customer's name or email. Ask the vendor which protected fields the app requests, why, and where the data is stored. An app that reads more than the offer needs is a reason to ask more questions.
8. What plan does each feature need?
Plan limits hide in the details. Shopify's Help Center says combining two product discounts on the same line item requires the Shopify Plus plan, and says that Buy X get Y automatic discounts apply only at retail locations with a POS Pro subscription (POS Lite stores can use them only in the online store checkout). The overview page on discount types adds that Checkout Blocks for custom discounts are available on the Shopify Plus plan. Ask for a table of features by Shopify plan, and ask about the point-of-sale and checkout cases if you sell there.
9. What happens to gift inventory?
On a native free item, Shopify's Help Center says that if the free product's inventory drops to zero, the product displays as sold out. A gift that runs out can quietly stop an offer, or it can show a promise the store cannot keep. Ask: does the app check gift stock, does it hide the offer when the gift runs out, can the gift be a variant, and what does the shopper see?
Also ask whether the gift line goes through to the order and fulfillment as a zero-price item, so your warehouse picks it. A gift that disappears from the pick list is a support ticket.
10. How do I see whether the offer worked?
Shopify's Sales by discount codes report groups sales by discount name, such as a discount code or an automatic discount's name, and the page notes that combinable discounts can cause duplicates, since an order appears once for each discount applied. It does not say whether discounts created by an app appear there. Ask the vendor to show a test order in that report, and ask what the app's own reporting adds. If you cannot find out how many orders earned the gift and what the gift cost, you cannot set the threshold with confidence; the method is in Free Gift Threshold: Pick a Spend Level.
How to run the shortlist
Put the ten answers in a table, one column per vendor. Mark each answer as "documented," "demonstrated on a test store" or "claimed." Only the first two count. Install your finalists on a development store, build the same offer in each, and run the same four carts: below the line, at the line, over the line with a code, and a return to below the line. Take the one whose behavior you can explain to a shopper.

Where Freebies Engine by Log Studio Lab stands
We built Freebies Engine by Log Studio Lab for this job, and we list only what our template catalog says. For gifts, the catalog has templates named "Spend X, get a gift" ("Shoppers who reach a cart value get a gift added automatically"), "Free sample with purchase" ("Every order gets a small free product"), "Buy one, get one (BOGO)," "Buy X, get Y," "Gift tiers" ("More spent, more gifts, in as many steps as you like") and "Custom gift offer" ("Choose your own trigger, rules and gifts from scratch"). The Custom gift offer template is the place to start if none of the others fit. Pricing and plan requirements are on the pricing page, and the offer types are on the features page. Put the other nine questions to us the way you would to anyone else.
