Jersey City: in the Port District the Port Authority calls the East Coast's busiest, and a landing page plan

Jersey City sits on the Hudson River across from Manhattan, and its name appears in the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's own list of the cities in the Port District. The Port Authority's 2025 annual report says the Port of New York and New Jersey moved 5,955,798 loaded TEUs that year, 2.8 percent more than in 2024, and calls it the busiest port on the East Coast and among the top three in the country. The same report gives the agency's address as 2 Montgomery Street, Jersey City. A container port moves containers, not parcels, so the honest point for a Shopify store is narrow: if you import stock in containers, this is the port your forwarder probably names, and if you sell to shoppers in the Jersey City area, you can run a campaign that stands on a local page. This page sets out the port facts as the Port Authority gives them, says what they do not tell you, and builds a landing page free shipping plan around one metro campaign.

Where Jersey City sits

Jersey City is one of the cities of the Port District of the Port of New York and New Jersey, which the Port Authority calls the busiest port on the East Coast, and the Port Authority's own address is in the city.

A landing page shipping plan for a Jersey City area campaign

  1. Before you order stock

If you import by container, plan the campaign date from when the cargo is released, not from when it sails. The Port Authority's report calls the port the busiest on the East Coast, so ask your forwarder for the clearing date in writing and add a buffer week. This is planning advice, not a port rule.

  2. When you pick the audience

Choose one place shoppers arrive from, such as an email to subscribers with a Jersey City or Port District address or a post that links to the landing page. The report lists Newark, Jersey City, Bayonne, Hoboken and Elizabeth among the Port District's New Jersey cities, which gives you a named set of towns to write to.

  3. When you set the offer

Offer free shipping only to shoppers who arrive from that page, with a minimum order and an end date. Assume 400 orders from the page at 8 dollars of shipping each: the campaign costs you 3,200 dollars if every order uses it, and that is your ceiling. The developer setup the template needs is printed with the button below; plan for it before the campaign date. These are assumptions for the arithmetic.

  4. After the campaign

Compare orders and profit per order with the same weeks before the campaign. If orders from the page cost more in shipping than they added in margin, shorten the next campaign or raise the minimum.

Questions merchants ask

Is the Port of New York and New Jersey really in Jersey City?
The Port Authority's report lists Jersey City among the cities of the Port District, which covers the New York and New Jersey side of the harbor. The report does not say which municipality each marine terminal is in, so this page names no terminal as being in Jersey City.
What does a TEU measure?
The Port Authority's report spells TEU out as twenty-foot equivalent unit, a container measure. It reports 5,955,798 loaded TEUs for 2025. It is a container count, not a parcel or tonnage count.
Does the port matter to a store that ships parcels?
Only if you import stock by container. The port moves containers, and a store that ships parcels to shoppers uses carriers, so the port facts are background for importers. The report gives no data on parcel shipping.
How big is Jersey City?
The Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimate is 302,013 residents, up from 292,742 in the April 2020 base. By our sort of the New Jersey places in that file, only Newark is larger.
