Holiday Offer Calendar: October to January

A holiday offer calendar from October to January for US Shopify stores: key dates, carrier shipping cutoffs, and the offer to run in each window.

The holiday season does not run on one date. It runs on a chain of dates: a federal holiday that shapes who is shopping, a long weekend in late November, a hard carrier cutoff in mid-December, and a quiet week after Christmas when returns arrive and gift cards get spent. This holiday offer calendar lays out the chain for 2026 and early 2027, names the offer that fits each window, and keeps the carrier dates to the ones a carrier has actually published. Treat every offer here as a starting suggestion, check it against your margin, and give each one an end date.

The Thanksgiving date comes from federal law: 5 U.S.C. 6103 puts the holiday on the fourth Thursday in November, and the Office of Personnel Management lists Thursday, Nov. 26 for 2026. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are not federal holidays and we found no primary definition of either, so the dates here (Nov. 27 and Nov. 30) are computed from Thanksgiving. The Small Business Administration lists Small Business Saturday for Nov. 28, 2026.

October: build the list before the rush

October has one federal holiday, Columbus Day on Monday, Oct. 12, 2026, according to OPM, and Veterans Day follows on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Neither is a big retail event. What October offers instead is time. Shoppers who are three months from Christmas are comparing, not buying under pressure, and an email list built now is the audience for November.

What to run: not a discount. Offer early access to the holiday lineup, a gift above a threshold, or a first-order perk for subscribers. A gift costs you its landed cost and does not reset your price. Before you choose the threshold, run the free gift margin math to check the gift pays. Be careful about the other direction too: if you discount in October and again in November, you are training shoppers to expect the lowest price at every window, a problem we cover in discount fatigue.

Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday

This window is covered end to end in our Black Friday and Cyber Monday offer plan, which includes the timeline and the margin checks, so this page does not repeat it. Two dates to anchor: Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov. 26, and Small Business Saturday is Nov. 28, per the SBA. Decide now whether the offer starts on Thanksgiving or before, and when it ends, because a hard stop is the only thing that makes it a one-weekend event rather than a month of discounts.

December: the carrier cutoffs rule the month

In December, your shipping dates matter more than your offer. USPS published its recommended send-by dates for delivery before Dec. 25 on Sept. 22, 2026, and its holiday shipping page repeats them.

First-Class MailThursday, Dec. 17Thursday, Dec. 17
Priority MailFriday, Dec. 18Friday, Dec. 18
Priority Mail ExpressSaturday, Dec. 19Saturday, Dec. 19

The USPS page also lists international dates: Wednesday, Dec. 9 for First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International, and Wednesday, Dec. 16 for Priority Mail Express International. Military mail (APO/FPO/DPO) follows its own schedule by ZIP range, with a Ground Advantage send-by date of Wednesday, Nov. 4 for AE ZIP codes 090-092, 094-099, 340 and 962-966. The same page notes that Hanukkah falls earlier this year, from Dec. 4 to Dec. 12, so some gift buyers will be shopping at the start of the month.

UPS and FedEx publish their own last-ship dates on their holiday shipping pages, by service and by lane. Take them from those pages, and from your account representative if you ship with a volume contract. A calendar that mixes dates from a blog post with dates from a carrier is how a December promise turns into a refund.

What to run, by sub-window:

  • Dec. 1 to 17: a free shipping threshold, with a banner that states the last day to order for Christmas delivery for each shipping method you offer. Our guide to free shipping over 50 dollars covers one common threshold.
  • Dec. 18 to 25: the fast services are the only ones left, so switch the message from shipping to something that does not need a truck: digital gift cards, an email delivery option, or in-store pickup if you have a store. State the cutoff plainly. Do not call anything free shipping if a shopper has to pay for the faster service to arrive on time.

Christmas to New Year's: returns and gift cards

Christmas Day is Friday, Dec. 25, 2026, and New Year's Day is Friday, Jan. 1, 2027, both listed by OPM with no adjustment. (For planning next year, OPM shows Christmas observed on Friday, Dec. 24, 2027, because Dec. 25 falls on a Saturday.) USPS also lists Kwanzaa, Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, on its holiday page, which is a reminder that the week after Christmas has gift-giving occasions of its own.

This week has a different customer. Some have gift cards in hand, some are returning or exchanging, and almost all of them have a reason to come back. Offers that fit: a bonus on gift-card use above a minimum spend, a bundle that completes a purchase they already made, and shipping that covers the exchange. Keep the end date in early January so it does not blur into the next window.

January: clearance without teaching shoppers to wait

January is the month where discounts are most tempting and most damaging. The shopper who buys at 30 percent off in January will expect it next January, and, if you discounted the same product in November, may decide the November price was never real. Set rules before the sale begins:

  1. Clear only the stock you need to clear, and name it ("winter styles"), not the whole store.
  2. Give the sale an end date, and say it.
  3. Return to list price the day it ends. Our guide to discount fatigue explains why this protects any "regular price" you later claim.

Surfacing the right offer each day

By December you may have four or five live offers across different windows, and shoppers will not read a long banner list. The Today's offers widget in Freebies Engine by Log Studio Lab is described as "A launcher on your storefront listing live offers." Use it so that the offers that are active today are the ones shoppers see, and retire anything whose window has ended. Then, before the season starts, mark each date on this page in your own calendar, add the carrier dates for the services you use, and write the end date of every offer next to its start date.

Dates checked Oct. 10, 2026; carrier dates can change, so recheck the carrier pages in early December.
