Mother's Day Offers for Shopify Stores
Mother's Day offers for Shopify stores: the 2027 date, a backward schedule from the last shipping day, gift tiers and gift sets, and copy that avoids pressure.
Mother's Day offers are built around a deadline with a fixed date, which makes the holiday easier to plan than most retail moments and harder to fake. A shopper who orders for the day needs the gift in hand before Sunday, so the offer that matters most is the one you stop running early enough to deliver on time. This page gives the 2027 date and where it comes from, a backward schedule you can compute from your own handling and transit times, three offer structures that fit a gifting week, and the wording rules for any offer that uses the word "free". All the schedule math uses assumptions that you replace with your own numbers; no carrier deadline is claimed here, because carriers publish their own.
The date, from the statute
Federal law sets the day. Title 36 of the U.S. Code, section 117, says: "The second Sunday in May is Mother's Day." Counting from that rule, May 1, 2027 is a Saturday, so the Sundays in May 2027 fall on May 2 and May 9. The second Sunday, and Mother's Day 2027, is May 9, 2027.
Your last day to take orders for delivery is earlier than the holiday itself, and every gift offer you run should end before that day, not on Sunday.
Work backward from the delivery day
Pick the day the gift must arrive, then subtract the days each step takes. The formula is short:
Order cutoff = delivery day minus transit days minus handling days
Use business days (Monday to Friday) and check that no holiday falls inside the window. For a May delivery there is none in the weeks before Mother's Day, but if you ship on a Saturday or your carrier does not deliver on one, say so in your own count.
Assume you want gifts to arrive by Friday, May 7, 2027, two days ahead of the holiday, which leaves room for a delay. The table shows the last day to place an order for each combination of handling time (how long your team or fulfillment partner takes to pack and hand over a parcel) and transit time (business days from handover to delivery). The transit values are assumptions, not carrier promises; use the service level and zone you actually ship with.
| Handling time | 3 transit days | 5 transit days | 7 transit days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 business day | Mon, May 3 | Thu, April 29 | Tue, April 27 |
| 2 business days | Fri, April 30 | Wed, April 28 | Mon, April 26 |
| 3 business days | Thu, April 29 | Tue, April 27 | Fri, April 23 |
Read the middle cell as an example: with two business days of handling and five business days of transit, an order placed on Wednesday, April 28 ships on Friday, April 30 and arrives on Friday, May 7. An order placed on Thursday, April 29 arrives Monday, May 10, which is the day after Mother's Day. The cutoff is a date, not a feeling, so state it as one on the product page, the banner and the cart.
Two practical points keep the number honest. First, take your handling time from a real week, not the quickest day you ever had. Second, if you use a fulfillment partner, ask for the cutoff time of day as well as the days, because an order placed late in the evening may count as a next-business-day order.
Mother's Day offers that fit a gifting week
Gift tiers. Tiers raise the basket by giving a reason to add one more item. Assume three tiers at 60, 100 and 150 dollars. At each step the shopper receives a larger reward. The reward in a gifting week can be packaging, which feels like part of the present:
| Spend | Reward | Assumed landed cost | Cost as a share of the threshold |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 dollars | Hand-written card insert | 1.00 dollar | 1.7 percent |
| 100 dollars | Gift wrap and ribbon | 3.00 dollars | 3.0 percent |
| 150 dollars | Wrap plus a small keepsake item | 9.00 dollars | 6.0 percent |
The costs are invented to show the method. Replace them with your own landed cost, including packing time, and keep the largest reward under the share of margin you can give up at that spend. How to set a free gift threshold shows how to pick the numbers, and Black Friday free gift ideas lists reward types that do not depend on the season.
Gift sets. A set groups items that already belong together under one price and one box. It works in a gifting week because it removes the decision from a shopper who is unsure what to choose. The structure and pricing steps are in product bundling on Shopify.
Gift wrap as the reward. For a card or a keepsake, wrap is a small cost with a visible effect. The packing step adds handling time, so add it to your cutoff table before you offer it.
Late shoppers
Some shoppers arrive after your cutoff. You have three honest options, and the dishonest fourth is to leave the promise of delivery on the page.
- Say the cutoff has passed and what is still possible. "Orders placed now ship after Mother's Day" is a complete sentence, and it saves a refund request.
- Offer a gift card by email. A gift card the buyer can forward needs no shipping.
- Offer a printable card and a ship date. The shopper can give a note on Sunday and the item when it arrives.
The National Retail Federation's 2026 Mother's Day survey, published April 21, 2026, supports the gift card option as ordinary behavior rather than a last resort: 55 percent of the shoppers it surveyed planned to buy a gift card. The survey, released by the NRF and Prosper Insights & Analytics, covered 7,877 U.S. adult consumers in fieldwork from April 1 to April 8, 2026. Its forecast for total Mother's Day spending was a record 38 billion dollars, and the average planned spend per person was a record 284.25 dollars. These are 2026 survey figures about planned spending, not predictions for 2027, so use them as context for how large the moment is rather than as a sales target.
Copy that avoids pressure
A fixed cutoff is useful, and a false one is not. Keep the urgency tied to a true date.
- Write the date and the reason: "Order by Wednesday, April 28 for delivery before Mother's Day on May 9."
- Do not run a countdown clock that resets, or a "last chance" banner that returns the next day.
- If you use the word "free" for a reward, state the terms in the same line as the offer. The FTC's guide on the word "free," 16 CFR 251.1, says the terms and conditions of a free offer should be set out clearly and conspicuously at the outset and in close conjunction with the offer, and that a footnote reached by an asterisk does not count. "Free gift wrap on orders over 100 dollars" is complete. "Free gift wrap*" is not.
- The same guide says a purchaser can believe the merchant will not recover the cost of the free item by marking up the item that must be bought, so do not raise prices ahead of a free-wrap promotion. This is not legal advice; confirm requirements for your own offers with counsel.
Building the gift tiers
The app's Gift tiers template is described as "More spent, more gifts, in as many steps as you like". Set your tiers from the table above, schedule the start for the first week of April, and set the end date to your order cutoff from the schedule, not to Mother's Day. Then test one order at each tier before the campaign goes live, and read the rest of the calendar in the holiday offer calendar so the stock you commit to the gifts does not collide with later promotions. Before you pick tiers over a straight price cut, free gift vs discount compares what each costs per order, and the real cost of discounting shows why a percentage off is rarely cheap.
