Small Business Saturday 2027: DTC Offers

Small Business Saturday 2027 is Nov. 27. Who runs the day, whether it fits an online small brand, and an offer that stands apart from Black Friday discounts.

Small Business Saturday is the one shopping day of the November run-up that a small online brand can claim without having to out-discount anybody. It has an organizer, a date set by the calendar and a name that describes who it is for. That makes it worth a separate plan instead of a row in the Black Friday and Cyber Monday schedule. This guide fixes the 2027 date, says who runs the day and in the organizers' own words who takes part, and then builds an offer for it that does not depend on a discount: a gift that appears when the cart reaches a spend level. It ends with how to measure the day apart from the rest of the week.

The date: Saturday, Nov. 27, 2027

Small Business Saturday falls on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The U.S. Office of Personnel Management lists Thanksgiving Day 2027 as Thursday, Nov. 25. The Saturday after it is therefore Nov. 27, 2027. That date is computed by us from the OPM listing and the day's own rule, not read from an organizer's page, because the SBA's page lists only the 2026 edition, Saturday, Nov. 28, 2026.

The same arithmetic puts Black Friday on Nov. 26, 2027 and Cyber Monday on Nov. 29, 2027. Our Black Friday and Cyber Monday offer plan has the week-by-week table. This post is about the one day inside it that has its own audience.

Who runs it, in their own words

Two organizations put their names on the day, and what each says is slightly different.

American Express's Shop Small history page says the company created Small Business Saturday "in the midst of the recession in 2010," on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The page describes a coalition around the day: shoppers, business owners and civic leaders, organizations that sign up as Neighborhood Champions, and officials in all 50 states.

The U.S. Small Business Administration's page says Small Business Saturday was founded by American Express in 2010 and has been officially cosponsored by the SBA since 2011. The same page carries a disclaimer: the SBA says its participation in the cosponsored activity is not an endorsement of the views, opinions, products or services of any cosponsor or other person or entity. We repeat that because it is the SBA's own caution, and because a store should not describe itself as endorsed by either organization. If you want to use either organization's logo, ask for its brand guidelines first.

Is it for online brands?

The answer depends on what the organizers actually say, and the pages we could read are narrower than most blog posts about the day suggest.

American Express's history page says its card members in select countries are encouraged to shop small "in their local communities and online," and it offers "a gift from a local artist's online store" as an example of shopping small. That is the strongest wording we found for an online seller, and it is American Express's, not the SBA's. The SBA page tells shoppers they can find small businesses participating in their area and tells owners they can get free marketing materials, and it does not say whether participation is online or in person. Neither page we read sets a definition of how small a business must be to qualify.

So the safe reading for a Shopify brand is narrow. The day invites shopping at small businesses, and American Express's own page names an artist's online store as an example. It does not promise your store a listing, traffic or an endorsement, and an offer should not suggest otherwise.

An offer that is not a discount

Black Friday trains shoppers to look for a percentage. Small Business Saturday asks for something else: a reason to buy from a person who makes or chooses the product. A gift with purchase fits, because it adds something rather than cutting the price, and because it can carry the maker's own touch. Three versions work for a small online brand:

  1. A spend-and-get gift. The cart reaches a level and a small product is added. It is the version the template below builds.
  2. A maker's note. A printed card or a sample made in the same batch as the order. It costs little and cannot be compared on price.
  3. Local pickup, only if you have it. If you run a shop or a studio with a pickup window, the day is a natural moment to open it. If you do not, leave it out.

The arithmetic of a spend-and-get gift

The numbers here are assumptions to be replaced with your own. Assume your usual order is 48 dollars, your margin on product is 55 percent, and the gift has a landed cost of 4.20 dollars.

  • Each dollar of merchandise contributes 0.55 dollars of margin, so a gift that costs 4.20 dollars is covered by 4.20 ÷ 0.55 = 7.64 dollars of added merchandise.
  • Set the threshold at 56 dollars. A shopper who moves from a 48 dollar order to a 56 dollar order adds 8 dollars of merchandise, which contributes 4.40 dollars, against a gift cost of 4.20 dollars. The offer breaks even on that shopper and does not lose money.
  • The cost sits elsewhere. Every shopper who was already going to spend 56 dollars or more receives the gift without changing anything, and each of those orders costs you 4.20 dollars. Look at your own order value spread before you pick the level, as our free gift threshold guide shows, so the share who would have qualified anyway is small.

Compare the same day with a percentage discount using our free gift versus discount guide. A 10 percent discount on a 56 dollar order costs 5.60 dollars on a full-price sale, more than the gift in this example.

Say the condition where the offer is

The FTC's guide on the word "free" (16 CFR 251.1) says the terms and conditions on which receipt of a free item depends should be set out clearly and conspicuously at the outset of the offer, in close conjunction with it. If your banner says "free gift," it should also say what the cart must reach. It also says the buyer is paying no more than the regular price for the item that must be bought, so do not raise a price to pay for the gift. This is not legal advice. The simplest wording avoids the word: "Spend 56 dollars on Small Business Saturday and a gift is added to your cart."

One state rule that rewards the day

One state has tied a tax rule to the day. A New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department release dated Nov. 22, 2024 described a Small Business Saturday tax holiday on Nov. 30, 2024, when the state allowed non-franchise small businesses to deduct their sales of qualifying items under a per-item price cap, excluding gift cards. We have not confirmed that the deduction continues for 2027, and a store without a New Mexico business may not qualify. Our New Mexico page records what we could and could not confirm. Check with the Department before you plan around it. This is not tax advice.

Measure the day apart from the week

If you do not measure Small Business Saturday on its own, the week around it swallows the result. Black Friday orders arrive the day before, Cyber Monday two days after, and email sends overlap. Decide three things before the day starts:

  • The window. Midnight to midnight in your store's time zone on Nov. 27, 2027. Write it down.
  • The comparison. The same Saturday last year, and the Saturday a week earlier, both with the same hours of the day. If last year had no offer, you have a before; if it did, you have a like-for-like.
  • The three numbers. Orders that reached the threshold, orders that would have reached it anyway (judge that from your usual order values), and margin per order after the gift. Our guide to measuring promotion results shows how to pull these from an order export.

Anything beyond that, such as how many new customers the day brought, needs a holdout or a matched period.

Build the gift

In Freebies Engine by Log Studio Lab, the Spend X, get a gift template is described as "Shoppers who reach a cart value get a gift added automatically." Set the cart value to your threshold, choose the gift product, and put the end of the offer at the close of Nov. 27. Check the plan requirements on the pricing page. After the day, switch the offer off so it does not carry into Cyber Monday.
