Valentine's Day Offers: Gift Sets and Gifts

Valentine's Day promotions for Shopify stores in 2027: the Sunday Feb. 14 date, gift sets for two, gift with purchase tiers, and copy without false urgency.

Valentine's Day promotions have one advantage over most seasonal sales: the date never moves, so the only thing to work out is what the weekday does to your shipping. In 2027 the weekday is the problem. February 14 falls on a Sunday, the Monday after it is a federal holiday, and a parcel that misses the Friday before has no dependable day left to arrive. This page works out those dates, uses the National Retail Federation's latest survey for one honest picture of who is buying, prices a gift set for two against two single gifts, builds a gift tier around the set's price, and writes urgency copy that stays true. All the prices and costs are invented to show the arithmetic; replace them with your own.

The 2027 date, and what a Sunday does to your cutoff

No statute sets Valentine's Day, and it is not among the holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103, so the date comes from the calendar. January 1, 2027 is a Friday. February 14 is 44 days later, and 44 days is six weeks and two days, so it is a Sunday. February 15, the third Monday of February, is Washington's Birthday, which section 6103 lists as "the third Monday in February." That makes Monday, February 15, 2027 a federal holiday, the day after Valentine's Day.

Two things follow. A gift meant to arrive by the 14th has to arrive by Friday, February 12, or Saturday the 13th if you and your carrier handle Saturdays. And a gift that slips past Friday cannot be counted on until after the holiday weekend: whether your carrier delivers on Monday the 15th is in its own holiday schedule, which you should read rather than assume.

Work backward from Friday, February 12. Use the convention that a parcel ships on the order date plus the handling business days and arrives the shipping date plus the transit business days. With two business days of handling and three of transit, which are assumptions and not carrier promises, an order placed on Friday, February 5 ships Tuesday, February 9 and arrives Friday, February 12. That Friday is your cutoff. Mother's Day offers for Shopify stores shows how to build the full table from your own handling and transit times, so this post does not repeat it.

Who the shoppers are buying for

The National Retail Federation's 2026 Valentine's Day survey, released with Prosper Insights & Analytics on January 27, 2026, asked 7,791 adult consumers about their plans, with fieldwork on Jan. 2 to 8. NRF's survey found that 55 percent of consumers planned to celebrate, and that 83 percent of those celebrating planned to buy a gift for a significant other. It put expected spending at a record 29.1 billion dollars and the average planned gift budget at a record 199.78 dollars, and it named online as the top shopping destination at 38 percent. These are 2026 plans, not a forecast for 2027, so they describe the size and the main buyer, not a sales target.

What the survey supports is a decision about the product: most of the people who celebrate plan to buy for a significant other, so the offers below are built around a gift for a partner, not a bulk purchase.

A gift set for two against two single gifts

A set "for two" is a pair of matching items in one box. It suits a Valentine's Day buyer who is picking a gift that works for a couple, and it raises the question every set raises: who would have bought the singles anyway?

Assume a single item sells for 45 dollars and costs 18 dollars landed. A set of two sells for 80 dollars, with a retail value of 90 dollars, and costs 36 dollars for the items plus 3 dollars for the box and a card insert, so 39 dollars. The set earns 41 dollars. Compare it with what each buyer would otherwise have done:

If the set buyer would otherwise have boughtProfit without the setProfit with the setChange
Nothing0 dollars41 dollars+41 dollars
One single (profit 27 dollars)27 dollars41 dollars+14 dollars
Two singles (profit 54 dollars)54 dollars41 dollars−13 dollars

The set only loses money when it replaces a pair of singles. That is the cannibalization question that holiday gift set bundles works through, including the defense of putting something in the box that is not sold alone. Here the box and the card insert do that job: a shopper cannot assemble the set from your catalog.

A gift tier at the set's price point

A gift with purchase can sit at the set's price so that the set is where the shopper stops climbing, or above it so the shopper adds a single. Build three tiers from the set and the single:

CartRevenueLanded costGift costProfitMargin
One set80 dollars39 dollars2.50 dollars (gift wrap)38.50 dollars48.1 percent
One set and one single125 dollars57 dollars7 dollars (a small keepsake)61 dollars48.8 percent
Two sets160 dollars78 dollars12 dollars (a larger keepsake)70 dollars43.8 percent

The tiers are 80, 125 and 160 dollars, each reached by a cart a real shopper would build. Gift costs are invented and the margins fall as the gift grows, so check your own tier against the margin you can give up. How to set a free gift threshold explains the ceiling, and tiered free gifts covers the spacing of steps.

Urgency that is real

Your cutoff is the only deadline that belongs on the page, so use it, and give the reason:

  • "Order by Friday, February 5 for delivery by Valentine's Day on Sunday, February 14."
  • After the cutoff: "Orders placed now ship after Valentine's Day. Add a printable card and we will email it today."
  • Do not use a countdown clock that restarts, and do not write "only a few left" unless your stock count says it.

If the gift is described as free, state the conditions in the same line as the offer. The FTC's guide on the word "free," 16 CFR 251.1, says the terms of a free offer should be clear and conspicuous at the outset and in close conjunction with the offer, and that a footnote reached by an asterisk is not enough. "Free gift wrap on orders of 80 dollars or more" is complete; "Free gift wrap*" is not. This is not legal advice.

Building the gift tiers

The app's Gift tiers template is described as "More spent, more gifts, in as many steps as you like." Set the three thresholds from the table, schedule the start for the first week of February or earlier if your sets are ready, and set the end to your cutoff on Friday, February 5, not to Valentine's Day. Place one test order at each tier before the campaign goes live. The rest of the winter calendar is in the holiday offer calendar, so the stock you commit to gift sets does not collide with later offers.
