Experiment Engine

Checkout tests and placing the block

Show a message on the thank-you page, the order status page or a checkout step, then place the Experiment Engine block in Shopify's checkout editor.

A Checkout test shows some shoppers a short message and the rest nothing. Version B carries a banner with a style, a title and a message, in plain text. The original shows nothing. You compare the versions on the goal you chose, like any other test.

  • Thank-you page: right after the order is placed. Works on every plan.
  • Order status page: where shoppers look up their order. Works on every plan.
  • Checkout: information, Checkout: shipping and Checkout: payment: a step of checkout. These need Shopify Plus, and the Testing plan that includes checkout tests.

Place the block

Shopify only shows an app block where you place it, so a checkout test needs one setup step in Shopify after you launch. The block needs no extra permissions and sends nothing from the page: the app publishes the test to your store, and the block reads it.

  1. Create a Checkout test, pick where it shows and write the title and message for each changed version. The preview shows how the banner looks.
  2. Launch the test. Until you place the block, shoppers see nothing, and the launch sheet reminds you.
  3. In your Shopify admin, open the checkout editor (Settings, then Checkout, then Customize) and choose the page: the thank-you page, or a checkout step.
  4. Add the Experiment Engine Checkout Test block where you want the message to appear, then save.
  5. For a checkout step, you can set the block's Checkout step setting to that step. Leave it empty to show any checkout step test.
  6. Open your store in a private window, join the test, and check each version with a test order.
  • The thank-you block also shows on the classic order status page of stores that still use it. A store on the new customer accounts shows the order status block there.
  • The block counts a shopper as in the test when they were assigned on your storefront, so the app embed and tracking must be on.
  • If you end the test, the block shows nothing again. You can leave it placed or remove it.

Common questions

Why does a checkout step need Shopify Plus?

Shopify lets apps add blocks to the information, shipping and payment steps only on Plus. The thank-you and order status pages work on every plan.

Can the message contain a link or formatting?

No. The title and message are plain text, so nothing a shopper sees can run code or send them away from your checkout.
