Shipping from Reno: the West Coast zones, and what they do to a free shipping line
For a store that ships from northern Nevada, the useful number is not the size of the state's cargo airport but the USPS zone from the origin ZIP. From a Reno ZIP, the zone chart effective October 1, 2026 puts San Francisco in zone 3, Los Angeles, Portland and Seattle in zone 4 and Phoenix in zone 5, and the far East Coast in zone 8. That spread is what a free shipping line has to be built on. This page gives those zones with the origin and the date stated, the Reno-Tahoe International Airport cargo figure for 2025, Nevada's 6.85 percent statewide minimum sales tax rate and what it is made of, the Department of Taxation's remote seller test, and a landing-page free shipping plan for West Coast shoppers. This is not tax advice; confirm with the Nevada Department of Taxation.

Shipping into the state
Nevada has 109,781 square miles of land, and the Bureau of Land Management says 67 percent of the state is public land, so the shipping map here is about origin more than about roads. A store in Reno reaches San Francisco in USPS zone 3 and Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City in zone 4, then pays for distance as the zone climbs to 5 for Phoenix and Denver, 6 for Dallas, 7 for Chicago and 8 for New York and Miami. Reno-Tahoe International Airport handled 37,915 metric tons of cargo in 2025, down about 18.3 percent on 2024, but that is an airport statistic, not a promise about your carrier's transit time.

A West Coast free shipping landing page
- This week
Open the USPS zone chart, enter your own origin ZIP and read the zone for the destinations you ship to most. From a Reno origin the chart effective October 1, 2026 shows zone 3 for San Francisco and zone 4 for Los Angeles, Portland and Seattle. The zone sets the carrier's rate for each parcel, so the chart is the first input to any free shipping line.

- Before you pick a threshold
Price a typical parcel for zone 4 and for zone 8 from your own carrier's rate card and compare them. A free shipping line that is safe for a zone 4 shopper can lose money on a zone 8 order, so decide whether the offer covers the whole country or only the West.

- When you build the page
Send West Coast campaign traffic to one landing page and give free shipping only to shoppers who arrive from it. This Freebies Engine by Log Studio Lab template needs a developer to set up, so schedule that work before the campaign. See plan requirements on the pricing page.

- In the banner and the cart
Write the minimum and the destination limit in the same line as the words free shipping, not in a footnote. The FTC's guide on the word free asks for the conditions to be clear at the outset. This is not legal advice.

- Each January
Total your Nevada sales for the year. The Department says a remote seller must collect once total sales exceed 100,000 dollars or there are more than 200 separate transactions in the previous or current calendar year. The statewide minimum rate is 6.85 percent, and counties add their own on top.

Questions merchants ask
- How do USPS zones change when I ship from Reno?
- The zone is read from the origin and destination ZIP codes, so it depends on where you ship from. With an origin of 89501 in Reno, the chart effective October 1, 2026 gives San Francisco zone 3, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, Las Vegas and Salt Lake City zone 4, Phoenix and Denver zone 5, Dallas zone 6, Chicago zone 7 and New York and Miami zone 8. Run the chart again from your own ZIP.
- What is Nevada's sales tax rate?
- The Department of Taxation says the statewide minimum is 6.85 percent, built from a 2.00 percent state tax, a 2.60 percent school support tax and two city-county relief taxes of 0.50 and 1.75 percent. Counties add their own rates on top, so the rate at a shopper's address can be higher. This page does not quote a county rate; look the address up with the Department. This is not tax advice.
- When does an out-of-state store have to collect Nevada tax?
- The Department's FAQ says that if total sales exceed 100,000 dollars or there are more than 200 separate transactions in Nevada during the previous or current calendar year, a remote seller must collect tax on all its Nevada sales. It must register by the first day of the month at least 30 days after crossing the threshold. This is not tax advice; confirm with the Department of Taxation.
- Does the cargo airport in Reno make my deliveries faster?
- This page makes no such claim. Reno-Tahoe International Airport reported 83,602,552 pounds of cargo for 2025, but the airport does not publish your carrier's transit times. Read the transit time for your own origin and destination from the carrier's service table.
