Minneapolis at 9.025 percent: five local taxes on one order, and a single code plan

A Minneapolis order carries more local tax lines than most stores expect. The Minnesota Department of Revenue's rate guide for Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2026 puts the combined rate for a Minneapolis address at 9.025 percent: the 6.875 percent state rate plus a Hennepin County tax, the county transit tax, a Minneapolis city tax, and two metro-area taxes that took effect on Oct. 1, 2023. The state's sourcing statute sends a delivered order to the place where the buyer receives it, so the rate follows the shipping address, not your warehouse. Minneapolis also has an entertainment tax that reaches merchandise sold in public places during live performances, which matters if you sell at gigs as well as online. This page sets out the rate, the rule that decides which taxes reach a delivery, what the city is, and a single code plan for the Twin Cities Marathon weekend.

A single code for the Twin Cities Marathon weekend

  1. Before you choose a discount

Place a test order to a Minneapolis address and read the tax line. The Department's guide for Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2026 lists 9.025 percent. Rates are posted by quarter, so re-check the guide each quarter and read the tax line after the code is applied.

  2. When you write the banner

Do not promise a price that includes tax. The address decides which of five local lines apply, and a shopper in another city, even in the same county, can see a different total for the same cart. Say the percentage off the item price and let checkout show tax.

  3. In the weeks before October 2027

Plan a single code for Twin Cities Marathon weekend, Oct. 15 to 17, 2027, and keep it pending until the organizers confirm the permit. Name the code for the event, set the same start and end as the weekend, and add a one use per customer limit so it does not outlive the weekend.

  4. If you also sell at live shows

Keep show sales and web sales apart. The entertainment tax can reach merchandise sold in public places during live performances in Minneapolis, which is a different rule from an online order delivered to a buyer, so give web buyers a code that is not printed on show flyers.

  5. The week after the weekend

Open the Sales by discount codes report and compare orders with the code to the same days the week before. Delivery addresses in the seven metro counties carry the two metro-area taxes, so group your results by county before you decide whether the offer worked.

Questions merchants ask

What is the sales tax rate in Minneapolis?
The Department of Revenue's rate guide effective Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2026 lists 9.025 percent for Minneapolis, made of the 6.875 percent state rate and the Hennepin County, county transit, Minneapolis and two metro-area taxes. Rates are posted by quarter. This is not tax advice; confirm with the Minnesota Department of Revenue.
Which local taxes reach a delivery to a Minneapolis address?
Section 297A.668 sources a delivered sale to the place where the buyer or the buyer's designated recipient receives it, so the local taxes for the shipping address apply. The metro-area taxes cover Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott and Washington counties and follow the same rules as other local sales taxes, according to the Department.
Does the Minneapolis entertainment tax apply to my online store?
The fact sheet describes it as applying to admission fees, amusement devices and games, food, drinks and merchandise sold in public places during live performances, and short-term lodging in the city. An online order shipped to a buyer is not described there, so ask the Department if your case is different.
When is the Twin Cities Marathon in 2027?
Twin Cities In Motion lists the 2027 weekend as Oct. 15 to 17, marked pending permit approval, in its July 7, 2026 announcement. Treat the dates as provisional until the organizers confirm them.
How big is Minneapolis?
The Census Bureau's Vintage 2025 estimate is 430,324 people, and the 2025 Gazetteer lists 54.000 square miles of land area and 3.507 square miles of water.

Where Minneapolis sits

Minneapolis is a place where several local taxes, a metro-wide tax and a home market for national retailers meet, so a store that ships here has to get the address-level tax line right and run offers beside well-known neighbors.
