Selling into Indiana: one statewide rate, a FedEx hub and a race weekend code plan
Indiana keeps the sales tax question short and puts the interesting part in the shipping. The Department of Revenue says the sales tax for the entire state is 7 percent, and its county page lists only innkeeper, food and beverage and local income taxes as the local layer, so a Shopify store collecting for an Indiana address starts from one merchandise rate. On the logistics side, FedEx describes its Indianapolis hub as the second-largest in its network, and the Indianapolis Airport Authority reports 899,065 tons of air cargo for 2025. The calendar adds the race: the 2027 Indianapolis 500 is set for Sunday, May 30, with practice, a road course race and qualifying through the weeks before it. This page sets out the rules and the facts, then builds a single race weekend code with a clear end date.

Shipping into the state
Indiana covers 35,826 square miles of land, and the state's air freight runs through Indianapolis: FedEx calls its hub there the second-largest in its network, and the Airport Authority counted 899,065 tons of freight and mail in 2025. For a Shopify store this is a reason to ask your carrier a specific question, not to assume a speed. Look up the service times from your own origin ZIP to a few Midwest destinations and publish only the delivery estimates you can see in the carrier's tool.

A single race weekend code with a clear end date
- When you pick the weekend
Pick the one code and the one rule. The 2027 Indianapolis 500 is on Sunday, May 30, so a code that starts on Saturday, May 15, the day of the road course race, runs to race day and stays clear of the Open Test on May 4 and 5. Name it for the weekend, not the discount.

- When you set the dates
Give the code a start and an end in the discount settings, and write the end in the banner: "Code RACEDAY ends Sunday, May 30 at midnight". INDYCAR lists qualifying on May 22 and 23, which falls inside that window, so the code never needs to run past the race.

- When you price it
Work out the discount from your margin before you choose a percentage, and check how it combines with your free shipping rule. The Department lists one 7 percent statewide rate and no local sales tax type, so a taxable order to an Indiana address totals the subtotal times 1.07, which makes a clean example for the banner.

- When you promise delivery
Use the carrier's own estimate for the shopper's ZIP, and set your order cutoff ahead of the race weekend. FedEx describes Indianapolis as the second-largest hub in its network, but your parcel's speed is whatever the service you bought says.

- Each quarter
Total your Indiana revenue against the 100,000 dollar line. Indiana dropped its 200 transaction test on Jan. 1, 2024, so a store with many small orders is judged on revenue alone, and sales made through a marketplace facilitator are left out of the count.
Build it with the Single code template.
Questions merchants ask
- What is the sales tax rate in Indiana?
- The Department of Revenue says the sales tax for the entire State of Indiana is 7 percent. Its county tax page lists only the innkeeper's, food and beverage and local income taxes as local taxes. This is not tax advice; confirm with the Indiana Department of Revenue.
- When does an out-of-state seller have to register in Indiana?
- The Department says a seller must register when it receives gross revenue of more than 100,000 dollars from sales into Indiana, and that the 200 transaction test was removed effective Jan. 1, 2024. Marketplace facilitator sales are not counted by the remote seller.
- When is the 2027 Indianapolis 500?
- INDYCAR's schedule release of Aug. 12, 2026 sets the 111th running for Sunday, May 30, 2027. It lists the Open Test on May 4 and 5, the Sonsio Grand Prix on May 15 and Armed Forces Qualifying Weekend on May 22 and 23.
- How big is the FedEx hub at Indianapolis?
- FedEx's Sept. 30, 2025 release calls it the second-largest hub in the company's network and says it recently opened a cold-chain facility of more than 16,000 square feet. The release gives no package count, so this page gives none.
- How much air cargo does Indianapolis International Airport handle?
- The Indianapolis Airport Authority's August 2026 activity report lists 899,065 tons of freight and mail for the 12 months of 2025 and 635,869 tons for January through August 2026. The report gives its cargo figures in tons.
