Urgency Bar: add a message or countdown
Show an announcement, free shipping progress or a countdown at the top of your store. Place it in your theme's header group and set where and when it shows.
Urgency Bar sits in the header of your theme, so nothing on the page jumps. It has three kinds: an announcement with an optional link, a free shipping bar that follows the cart, and a countdown. A countdown ends at a fixed date or at a daily cutoff you honor. It never restarts for each visitor.
Set it up
- Open Mini apps, then Urgency Bar, and create a bar. Pick its kind and write the message (up to 140 characters).
- In Where it shows, choose the page types, devices, countries and a schedule.
- In Behavior, set the close button: shoppers can close the bar for the visit or for some days.
- In Placement, use Open the theme editor, drag Urgency Bar to the top of your header area and save the theme.
- Come back and use Check my theme. The app reads your header and says whether it found the bar.
Add the Urgency Bar block once. It shows every live bar whose rules match the page.
Publish, pause and roll back
Shoppers see the last published version, never your draft. The bar at the top of the editor shows whether the bar is not published, live or paused, and flags Changes not published when your draft differs from what shoppers see.
- Select Publish. After the first publish the button reads Publish changes.
- In the review dialog, check Required before publishing. Each item that is not done has a Fix link that closes the dialog and opens the tab where you fix it.
- Confirm with Publish or Publish changes. Shoppers see it on your store within a few minutes, and the bar shows Delivering to your store until it arrives.
- Pause takes it off your store and keeps your settings and published versions. Resume brings back the version you last published; it does not publish your draft.
- Versions lists the last few published versions. Roll back on a version puts it back in front of shoppers. Your draft is not changed, so publishing again brings your latest edits back.
- Only admins can publish, pause, resume or roll back.
- The review lists what is missing, such as a message, a countdown end date that is still in the future, or a link that has text and an address, or neither.
- A fourth live bar is refused until you pause one of the three.
Limits
- Up to 3 bars can be live at once. Publishing a fourth is refused until you pause one.
- A message is up to 140 characters.
- A bar shows only where its rules match: page type, device, country and schedule.
Billing
A mini app is billed through your Shopify subscription for the app. Shopify allows one active subscription per app, so your store has a single charge made of your App suite plan and every mini app you subscribe to. Only the store owner adds or removes a mini app, from its page in the app, and Shopify asks you to approve the new total. The price is shown on the mini app's page. Development stores use mini apps at no cost. See Mini apps: billing and ended subscriptions.
Troubleshooting
- The theme has no header group: the app says your theme cannot show the bar above the header. The bar needs a theme with a header group.
- The check says it is not found: save in the theme editor, then check again.
- Two bars on the same page: every live bar whose rules match shows, up to 3. Narrow the page types, devices or dates of one of them if you want a single bar at a time.
- A countdown cannot be published: its end date is in the past. Pick a later date.
- Shopify did not let the app read your theme: open the app again and approve the updated permissions.
Common questions
Can I run a timer that restarts for every visitor?
No. Countdowns end at a fixed date or at a daily cutoff, so what shoppers read is true.
How many bars can be live?
Up to 3 at the same time, each with its own rules.
