Buy X Get Y Offers for Shopify Stores

Use a buy X, get Y offer on Shopify to pair a hero product with a different free item: when it fits, how the template works and the margin checks to run.

A buy X, get Y offer gives a free item that is different from the one the shopper bought. Where a BOGO hands over a second copy, this one lets you choose what goes with what: a shirt with a cap, a device with an accessory, a main product with a refill.

When it fits

  • You want to introduce a second product to people who already want the first.
  • The free item is cheap for you to supply compared with how valuable it looks.
  • The pairing makes sense on its own, so the shopper reads it as a gift rather than clearance.

How the template builds it

The app's Buy X, get Y template is described as "Buy certain products, get a different one free." Its example is a shirt with a free cap. You pick the products that trigger the offer and the product that comes free.

Two native Shopify behaviors apply here as well: the Buy X get Y discount can be limited to a number of uses per order, and Shopify's Help Center says customers must add all items to their cart manually. For offers where the same product sits in both the buy and the get sections, the Help Center says the lower-priced item the customer chooses is the one discounted.

Check the math first

The free item is a cost on every order that takes the offer. Buy X get Y: 12 structures, with margin math puts numbers on the common structures. Pair that with Free gift margin math if the free item has a meaningful cost.
