Kentucky's two air cargo hubs, and a shipping reward built for Derby week

Few states have as much to say about parcels as Kentucky. Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is the home of UPS Worldport and handled nearly 7.5 billion pounds of cargo, freight and mail in 2025, and in the north of the state, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is described by its own operator as home to Amazon's primary U.S. air hub and DHL's global super hub for the Americas. For a Shopify merchant the interesting part is not the planes. It is that a package bound for a Kentucky address starts from a state that sits in the middle of two sorting networks, and that the state's biggest dated event, the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 1, 2027, is a gifting and entertaining weekend that a cart progress bar can serve. This page gives the verified figures for both airports, the state's flat 6 percent sales tax with no local add-on, a 2026 change to the remote seller test, and a progress bar offer timed to Derby week. This is not tax advice; confirm with the Kentucky Department of Revenue.

Shipping into the state

Kentucky is 39,486 square miles of land and has two major cargo airports, one in Louisville and one in northern Kentucky. UPS Worldport covers 5.2 million square feet in Louisville according to the airport authority, and the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport hosts Amazon's primary U.S. air hub and DHL's global super hub for the Americas by its own description. None of that changes what a carrier charges you, but it does mean a Kentucky delivery address is close to the middle of two sorting networks, which is worth testing when you decide where a free shipping line should sit.

A progress bar for Derby week

  1. Now, before you set the reward

Pick the cart value at which your shipping reward starts, using your own shipping cost from your own carrier's rate card for a Kentucky address. Kentucky's sales tax is a flat 6 percent with no local add-on, so the price a shopper sees in the cart is the same across the state.

  2. Four weeks before Derby

Turn on a progress bar in the cart that shows how close the cart is to the reward. The Kentucky Derby is on Saturday, May 1, 2027, so a bar that says how much more to spend for the reward gives a gift or party-supply order a clear target.

  3. April 30 to May 1, 2027

Keep the reward live through the Oaks and Derby weekend, the dates the Derby's site lists for 2027, and end it on May 1. A date that ends is easier to describe truthfully than an open-ended promotion.

  4. Whenever the reward uses the word free

If the bar promises free shipping, state the cart minimum in the same line as the promise and do not raise prices ahead of the offer. The FTC's guide on the word free covers both points. This is not legal advice.

  5. Before you ship from outside Kentucky in volume

Check the remote seller test with the Department of Revenue. A 2026 law removed the 200 transaction standard effective August 1, 2026, but the Department's sales tax page still describes the older test, so confirm what applies to you.

Questions merchants ask

Does Kentucky have local sales taxes?
The Department of Revenue says no: sales and use tax is imposed at 6 percent of gross receipts or purchase price, and there are no local sales and use taxes in Kentucky. This is not tax advice; confirm with the Kentucky Department of Revenue.
When is the Kentucky Derby in 2027?
Kentucky Derby's site lists the 2027 Kentucky Derby and Oaks as April 30 and May 1, 2027, with the Derby on Saturday, May 1. The Derby is held on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Check the site again before you schedule an offer, since organizers can change dates.
Does shipping from Louisville or Cincinnati make my delivery faster?
This page does not make that claim, because no source we read says so. What the sources say is that both airports run large cargo operations, UPS Worldport in Louisville and the Amazon and DHL hubs at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky. Your transit time is whatever your carrier's service table says for your origin and destination.
Did Kentucky change its remote seller rule?
The Department's July 29, 2026 letter to the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board says House Bill 757 removed the 200 transaction standard for remote retailers and marketplace providers, effective August 1, 2026. Its sales tax page still describes the earlier test of 200 sales or 100,000 dollars, so confirm the current threshold with the Department.
