Memphis: the FedEx hub, a 9.75 percent city rate and a barbecue contest
Memphis matters to a Shopify store for one reason that is easy to say and hard to use: it is where FedEx sorts. The company describes its Memphis World Hub as the heart of its global network and the largest sort facility in it, on 940 acres with 171 aircraft gates. A store that ships with FedEx is never far from that building in a transit sense, and a store that ships from Memphis has a different clock from one that ships from Maine. This page separates what the hub tells you from what it does not. It does not set your carrier's pickup time or your price. It does set a context for the promise you can make about late cutoffs and overnight service, for the tax rate your Memphis shoppers see and for the one big local event, a spring barbecue contest with its own dates.
FedEx describes its Memphis World Hub as the largest sort facility in its global network, so a store shipping with FedEx from or to the Memphis area works on a different clock for late pickups and overnight service than one far from it.
A shipping-tier plan with a faster tier for bigger carts
Before you set the tiers
Read your carrier's rate card for a standard and a faster service from your warehouse ZIP code, and compute the cost of each for your usual parcel. The hub tells you nothing about price.
Shoppers in the city pay a combined 9.75 percent on most taxable items. Say in the banner whether your free shipping line counts the cart before or after tax.
Offer free standard shipping at one cart value and a discounted faster service at a higher one. The size of the Memphis hub does not change what your carrier charges, so price the faster tier from your own rate card, not from the hub.
Say what you control: orders placed by your own cutoff ship the same day. Do not write that an order arrives overnight because a hub is in Memphis, since arrival depends on the carrier's service level and the destination.
Run a small gift with purchase for the contest dates, May 12 to 15, 2027, with a unit cap and an end date on May 15. The festival's site lists no dates for its Memorial Day weekend River Run beyond the month, so do not build a dated offer on it.
FedEx's October 2024 release says the World Hub spans 940 acres with 171 aircraft gates, can process 484,000 packages per hour, and is the largest sort facility in the FedEx global network. The figures are the company's own and carry that date.
What is the sales tax rate in Memphis?
The Tennessee Department of Revenue lists the general state rate as 7 percent, and its 2019 notice set the Memphis local rate at 2.75 percent from January 1, 2020, which adds up to 9.75 percent on most items if that rate is unchanged. Some items have different rules, so confirm the current local rate and your items with the Department. This is not tax advice.
When is Memphis in May in 2027?
The festival's site lists the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest for May 12 to 15, 2027 and the River Run for Memorial Day weekend in May 2027.
The same FedEx release says the hub can process 484,000 packages per hour and describes a new Secondary 25 sorting facility of 1.3 million square feet across four levels.
On its sales and use tax page the Department lists the general state tax rate as 7 percent and says the local rate varies by county and city; and adding the Memphis local rate from the Department's 2019 notice gives 9.75 percent on most taxable items (our sum of the two published rates).
